Ang Moh Preparing for the CNY

Hello you! And thank you for your patience! :)

It's been an exciting first month at a new job and this week we will also celebrate the Chinese New Year (CNY) for the second time here in Singapore! There are a variety of traditions of how to celebrate it. Last weekend we had a reunion dinner with my husband's relatives, and this weekend (starting from Thursday which is a half-day at most offices), we will start visiting friends' and relatives' houses, giving ang bao (direct translation is 'red packet' - these red envelopes include money (no odd numbers allowed, they bring bad luck) and they are given to the younger ones by married couples). We also give oranges, they go in twos and they symbolize prosperity.

Decorated oranges are a big hit every year and they are available at every wet market or fruit store.

More about the many traditions coming up once I have it all captured in my camera!

This is how we've been preparing for the CNY:

We went to eat in a Western place first :D There will be so many Chinese foods later on ;)

There's a new restaurant near where I live and they cater for allergic people. First time for quite a while we were able to share the dishes :) The chorizo pasta was perfectly cooked and spicy enough and the sauce on the fish, made from egg yolks, was delicious! Just that we could have eaten bigger portions :D haha

My MIL and some of my relatives are buddhists so we showed respect by participating in the traditions. My husband used to do this every time before dinner at his home.

Card games are a huge part of the daily activities during CNY :D

Vegetarian duck rice, sambal sotong mixed with other Chinese food and a bamboo-wrapped fish dish (I can't recall the name). More food and other traditions coming up soon!! Have a great CNY everyone! Gong xi Gong xi!

This is the song that will play for the next two weeks in EVERY (literally every) shopping mall!

These Are a Few of My Favourite Things

The theme for this time's These Are a Few of My Favourite Things-post is COLOR!

Adding different spices to food - tumeric, herbs, chilli, sea salt, pepper, smoked paprika, cumin, cayenne pepper for salty food and cardemom, cinnamon, honey, vanilla, anis seeds and agave syrap for desserts - gives a splash of taste and lifts up a boring chicken and rice dish or a cup of yoghurt!

Home-made soy yoghurt! I absolutely love this with fruits and honey!! I tend to eat it up to five huge cups a day and my husband thinks this yoghurt has been the key for me to boost up my curves ;)

Singapore is a Heaven for foodlovers. In every corner you can find something amazing such as cute macarons in all different flavors!

Changing some of the colors you usually use in your daily make-up, or getting something new to your make-up bag, can be a very fast and fun way of making the entire day feel a bit different!

Papaya and pomelo, two of my all time fav fruits in Singapore :)

Weekend Pics

Hopefully you have had a great start for the new year! What we are looking forward is the start of the Chinese New Year (CNY), it's gonna be a horse year :)

I've just started with a new job and I'm very excited but also, as you can imagine, very tired and I have so many new things to learn that unfortunately I haven't had time to update my blog so often. I hope you still keep coming to my blog! Even if I post more rarely, I've got lots of ideas to write about.

Here are pics of what I've been up to when I haven't been blogging ;)

Having drinks, meeting friends... Learning about the Indian culture through our friends... My friend gave me this beautiful chakra :)

Lots of food, food and more food!

Shopping for some new dresses...

Have a great Monday everyone!!

Happy New Year 2014 + a Restaurant Review

Happy New Year!! Better later than never right? ;)

I'm planning on a post about the highlights of my year 2013 but before that I will tell you how I spent my New Year's Eve! This is also my first time doing a proper restaurant review so please tell me if you like it and if you would like to read more reviews!

In the "morning", we had a buffet lunch at Swiss hotel's restaurant Equinox. I had pretty high expectations because I've heard good things about their brunches - also the fact that Swiss hotel is the tallest building in Singapore is not a bad thing at all (imagine the view)!

However, I was positively surprised about the service as well as the quality and variety of the food. Having food allergies makes it sometimes very difficult to dine out but this brunch exceeded all my expectations and unlike usually, this time I didn't feel like I missed out on anything that non-allergic people can have. Almost everything was something I could take :)

You could choose from soup, selection of breads and filling salads, seafood, sashimi (at least five different types of salmon!!) and sushi. Main course is selected from the menu. For dessert there was an amazing selection of cheeses, fruits, cakes, mousses, ice cream... I'm getting hungry writing this (luckily I'm eating at the same time :D) I I must warn you about the photos!

It's so difficult to choose a favourite but I LOVED the chilli salmon sashimi, seafood salad and the amazing cheeses (a definite plus for having so many of them made from goat's or sheep's milk too!!). My favourite sweets were the crème brûlée and a mint chocolate ice cream with chuncks of chocolate :) Yummy!!

I can't even remember how many platefuls of salmon and all the goodness I took, probably close to a kilo :D haha. As  it was New Year, we had some drinks that were not included in the price ;)

A happy girl with lotsa good food and some champagne :) For main courses we chose boracay fillet and tenderloin steak. I must say that at least the fish was a disappointment. I would rather save my stomach for all the other amazing food! My husband liked his steak though.

For desserts....

If you haven't figured out yet I'm actually on a fattening diet, and it's working pretty well so far! ;) As I predicted, the view was breathtaking!

At night we watched the fireworks with dear friends of ours who recently got married. You can read about their wedding here.

I hope you all happiness and joy for the coming year - remember to be kind and respectful not only to others but yourself too!
