Kick That Flu!

I've been in influenza at home for the week so far and I'm terribly bored. I've had fever, cough and my voice sounds like a crow. To kick this flu I've gathered the most powerful arsenal around me.

Tea
Everyone knows it's good to hydrate (especially in Singapore where it's so hot) and just drinking water gets boring so I try to alternate with other liquids. Herbal teas taste good even cold!

Vitamin C
I take vitamin C as a supplement when in a flu but the best way body can absorb it is in its natural form - eating plenty of fruits helps to kick that flu and hydrate at the same time.

Chicken essence
This is a more "exotic" treatment lol. It's very Singaporean, and this essence is supposed to build the immune system. I take one that has ginseng root in it that's promised to energize ;)

Chocolate
What's the point of being sick if you can't reward yourself with something for staying at home bored and eating all the medicine?? haha

P.S There are only two submissions so far for the Giveaway lucky draw so any new entry's chances of winning are at a high 30%!! ;)

Immune Booster Smoothies x 2!

I came up with these recipes from the leftovers of the Chocolate Coconut Cream Cake (recipe here) and some old oranges. Both smoothies include lots of vitamin C to fight flus that are common during this cold season. Like the one we have here in Singapore... REALLY! It actually feels cold on some days when the temperature drops to somewhere close to 24°C ;) Believe it or not, yesterday my husband had to bring me a blanket while we were watching tv! :D

Blueberry Coconut Smoothie

Blueberries, coconut milk or cream (I used cream) and honey. That's all and yet so tasty! :)

Orange Banana Smoothie

1 peeled banana, 1 peeled orange, 1 tablespoon of flax seeds and honey

Power Popsicles!

I've been graving to make these ever since I came to Singapore! And after I did, I finished a dozen within 24 hours :D Why Power? Because they are packed with vitamin C! Super easy, fast, yummy and healthy, these ice pops are also a great way to make kids eat more fruits! And what's the best - they are COLD! ;)

Here is how you make them: blend any fruits with milk/cream of your choice in a blender and add about 1-2 teaspoon of honey per popsicle. I used honeydew and grapefruit. If you have vanilla extract, that brings extra flavor! Place in molds in the freezer for a couple of hours.

Get some sun!

I know many Asians don’t really want to get tanned and there are also a lot of warnings about the harm that excessive tanning can cause... BUT tanning is only dangerous if you burn yourself or constantly keep tanning without sunscreen.

In fact, there are numerous benefits from the sun! Sun is the reason there is life on earth, and sun has a positive effect on health. In countries where sun shines most of the year regularly (unlike in Finland!) people get flus less often and there is also less osteoporosis among the population. Vitamin D from the sun is super important for a healthy immune system, and exposing yourself to sun even 10-15 minutes can store up your daily vitamin D! In Finland when it got darker during the winter months, I always took vitamin D regularly as a supplement too. And I can tell you that, in fact, I did get sick less often! Even in Singapore I use a supplement on days that are rainy or when I’m too busy to get out in the sun for a while. Naturally the ´real thing´ from sun itself can’t be beaten.

In addition, sun has a great effect on mood; I can honestly tell you that in Singapore, I’ve felt less tired during mornings. The people are just looking at me like a weirdo walking outside the shelters while many women hold an umbrella over themselves on a sunny day ;)...

Of course if you spend a lot of time outside, remember to drink enough and use sunscreen.

I gotta go now, have some sun to catch! ;)
